Sowing Agency is an art exhibition inspired by Asian Pacific Islander leaders fighting for environmental justice, hosted by the non-profit Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA). Sowing Agency exhibited in Spring 2021 at the SOMArts museum in San Francisco, and is still running online; to view the virtual exhibition, click here.

AAWAA invited me to creative direct and lead design on the exhibition’s visual identity.
I rooted the design in flora that have roots in Asian American culture, like the malunggay herb and poppy; when woven together, they form an abstract representation of the globe. The exhibition’s identity is also rooted in activism, featuring a typeface by Vocal Type that was inspired by protest posters from the women’s suffrage movement.

This past year, violence against AAPI communities, and especially AAPI women, has been heartbreakingly exacerbated. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to use design to support the AAPI community and non-profits like AAWAA.

Pins were fastened onto biodegradable seed paper, embedded with wildflower, herb or vegetable seeds. Recipients were encouraged to plant the seed paper and continue the cycle of growth.
